Onychomycosis affects up to 14% of the population and most cases are caused by dermatophyte fungi. It presents as thickened, yellow, brittle or crumbling nails, usually starting at the edge.
The fungus lives inside and under the nail plate, which has almost no blood supply. Topical treatments struggle to penetrate; oral medications must be taken for months. Per the American Academy of Dermatology, confirmed cases usually need prescription treatment.
