Vertical ridges (running base to tip) are usually a normal part of aging, like wrinkles. Horizontal ridges (Beau’s lines) can follow illness, high fever, or trauma and indicate a temporary pause in nail growth.
Deep horizontal grooves, or ridges with color change or brittleness, warrant evaluation. Simple vertical ridges rarely need treatment.
