Healthy nails are smooth, uniformly colored, and free of pits or grooves. Warning signs include: yellow or dark discoloration, thickening, separation from the bed, pitting, spoon shape, or a dark streak.
A new dark streak under a nail can be a sign of melanoma and needs prompt evaluation. Never assume nail changes are “just fungus” without a professional look.
